"Jail Break" is the fifty-second and final episode of the first season of American animated television series ''Steven Universe'', which premiered on March 12, 2015 on Cartoon Network. The episode was written and storyboarded by Joe Johnston, Jeff Liu, and series creator Rebecca Sugar. The episode acts as a continuation of the arc started in the previous episode, "The Return", and just like the episodes "Mirror Gem" and "Ocean Gem", the two aired alongside each other as a "half-hour special" (according to the promos) ''Steven Universe'' follows the adventures of a young boy named Steven and his three magic alien guardians, Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl, who are together known as the Crystal Gems. Their ultimate goal is to protect the Earth from colonization by other members of their species. In the meantime, Steven must try to harness his own magical powers, which were inherited from Rose Quartz, his mother and the former leader of the Crystal Gems, while finding balance between being half-human and half-Gem. The episode covers Steven's attempt to save the Gems from the captivity of Peridot and Jasper, two Homeworld Gems leading a scouting mission on Earth. The episode includes the introduction of two characters, Ruby and Sapphire, who are also revealed to fuse to form Garnet. Johnston has confirmed that these characters are involved in a romantic relationship, which has been interpreted as LGBT representation. ==Plot== Having been incapacitated by Jasper in the previous episode, Steven awakes in an unfamiliar prison cell, which is located in Peridot's space ship. The door of the cell is a yellow force field, which is able to neutralize the strength of any Gem. Although coming in contact with the force field seems to irritate Steven, he is able to pass through it unharmed, as he is half-human. While finding the other Gems, Steven comes across Ruby, a fiesty Gem, and disrupts the force field with his body so that she can escape from her own cell; he immediately helps her search for her companion, Sapphire, by following the sound of her singing. Steven and Ruby come across Lapis Lazuli, but she insists that they don't free her so they can avoid exacerbating their current problems. With Ruby having run ahead on her own, Steven finds Sapphire, whom he also rescues from her cell. Soon, the two reunite while Steven had Sapphire; Ruby and Sapphire perform a fusion dance in joy, laughing, and they fuse into Garnet, who greets a surprised Steven and thanks him for what he did. Afterwards, Steven sets off to free Amethyst and Pearl from their cells, and Jasper arrives to see Garnet back togther. They then engage in combat during the song "Stronger Than You", while Steven, Pearl and Amethyst overpower Peridot and try to take control of the ship. Once Garnet returns, they are informed that they have managed to facilitate a crash-landing on Earth because of the battle. Peridot, however, escapes in an escape pod. Once they are back on Earth, the Crystal Gems have survived the crash-landing, but soon, Jasper and Lapis Lazuli emerge from the destroyed ship. Jasper, who needs another Gem to fuse with her to destroy the Crystal Gems, insists that Lapis be the one, and Lapis reluctantly agrees.
